Projects of 2020

I'm finally getting together a post of the kits I completed in 2020. I apologise for the very ratty final photos. I don't work with hoops, tend to just take a phone photo at the end (usually at night) and then put the finished product in a cabinet without ironing it, and start the new project immediately.

I fell in love with Owl Forest kits in 2020, and have pretty much formally declared my love for all Russian kits in the process, lol.


Three Dragons (Owl Forest Kit)






This was my first time working with Evenweave, I've always been staunchly Aida because of (fear) worrying about the learning curve. But these projects were way faster and easier than most kits I'd done in the past.



Except for this one. Owl Forest Kit, Fox Forest.

Poppies Kit. I can't remember the company. But this was 14 Aida (Aida my love).



I finished this off in 2021 and I don't have a photo of that yet, but this is the Frog Prince Kit by Owl Forest. It's the first time I've ever had to do single square stitches in Evenweave. I thought French knots were bad! (They are though).

Oh my goodness, they're all absolutely gorgeous! I've been hesitant to go to Evenweave for the same reason, but your results are inspiring me.

I did evenweave by choice for the first time recently. I tested the waters on a redo of a super easy blackwork owl. I'd had some peachy fabric in stash for ages, and it went surprisingly well with the reddish variegated thread I was using.

Once I knew I could do it, I embarked on an old Maia kit that went horribly wrong on Aida, in part because it's about half halfstitches. I'd given up because of a mistake I could in no way unpick, and only redid it once I was ready to deal with the evenweave. Stitched up super quick after that, as it's only 82 by 82 stitches, with a silhouette design to cut the number of actual stitches.

Honestly, after a lot of practice with Aida (I do like big projects) Evenweave was actually fine, and WAY easier than I'd built it up to be in my head (I was truly scared I just *couldn't* do it for some reason, no one else in my life does cross-stitch, so I had no one to sort of show me a stitch and see what it would be like so I just had my anxious imagination). But I loved the Owl Forest kits too much to pass up, so I decided to try.

It's firstly faster if you're getting kits in this kind of style, and you might be surprise how easy you find it. I love Evenweave projects now, and I'll get them as easily as Aida kits from here on in. :D

So pretty! I especially like the dragons and the foxes. Yeah, evenweave is definitely different, but the finished effect can be quite nice (I've used it a couple of times).

Yeah the dragons was the first one I did, so colourful and folkloric. :D (And I like the finished effect too! It's a really nice fabric, it also feels nicer for me personally on the hands while I'm stitching).

Oh thank you, the poppies I did for my mother, but soon after completing it she said 'I hope no one gets me anything else to hang on my wall, I don't have room' so now - like every other project, it's in my cabinet, lol.

I have done two Russian designs recently and they were amazing. One was a Totoro with blends and all sorts. My husband took it to a shop to get the threads/fabric, as it came pattern only, and they took a look and very tactfully asked him if I was an experienced stitcher :)

Actually, the Totoro itself wasn't too bad, but the tree he was sitting under had me counting and recounting to get it right.

Oh the Totoro sounds great! I love Studio Ghibli and it's never occurred to me to look for cross stitch inspired works but I really should.

It's hard when you end up having to count/recount, and I hate having to take stitches apart - some errors I can get around (there's actually one still in the fox piece, which isn't visible, because a fox is just a whole row to the left, which is fine as none of them are touching and it's not symmetrical anyway), but some just... oof.
