I have a question about the cloth size -- patterns usually say how large the finished product should be, right? I was wondering if that's inclusive of a border around the pattern or if that just referred to the pattern itself.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! I hope that made sense D:

I think it usually refers to the pattern itself. If you buy a kit with a cloth included, there is a border left but if you buy the cloth yourself, you should give yourself a bigger size.

I think it really depends on the pattern. Some of the big patterns you buy do not include any sort of border. It just goes to the end. I use a lot of patterns that are free online (through forums, etc.) and they will often have a bit of a border, or just a blank background for you to decide what you want to do with it, and how big it is. If the pattern itself has blank squares, then I would assume the overall size included the border.

I agree with the other comment--always get cloth somewhat bigger than you think you need. It also makes it easier to get it framed properly, and it leaves you room to play with the size.

It differs from pattern to pattern, but it will *always* say, one way or the other. :-)

and most of them will give you the stitch count -- and then you can calculate it for yourself!
