Oh, yay, there IS a cross-stitch group here on Dreamwidth! *waves* Hi, I'm nonnie, and after dropping the hobby entirely back in the mid-90s, I fell hard back into cross-stitch during the pandemic. It's still my main hobby, though I've always got a few irons in the fire. I'm active in various x-stitch groups on facebook and Instagram, and in my local community (we are fortunate to have a fabulous local shop), but I'm trying to find alternatives to the Meta-verse. So, I'm back here at Dreamwidth (my account dates from 2009) and hoping to find community here.

For fun, here are a few of the projects I'm most proud of finishing this past year.

I have a few more, but in the interest of not spamming the community in my first post, I'll leave off. I do have a post in my journal for all of them; it helps my ADHD brain to see what I've actually done in the past year. My journal is friendslocked for general purposes, but I am pretty open about friending folks, so drop me a note if you like.

I am looking forward to seeing what folks are working on as well as finishes!

I'm back with another set of recently completed projects. The magazine the charts were in called them Folk Art Angels, but to me they didn't seem like either, so I've been calling them Garden Fairies.

Teresa Wentzler is taking her site down

Hi All,
Just thought I'd post here in case you haven't seen the news: Teresa Wentzler is taking her blogs and her site down. It's the end of an era, and it's a little bit sad. I love her designs.

Some of her patterns are still available at Patterns Online, although she did remove her dragons from the internet in 2018.

If you want to grab any of the errata or floss lists from there, I'd suggest grabbing them in the next ~week. She says she's taking it down on the 14th of August.

In addition to those, when she took her dragons off the internet, she removed them from the index page listing but didn't remove the actual webpages so here are four free dragons

I am on a roll with finishing stuff this year.

The pattern is by Shingorengeki on DeviantArt, aka NeedleMinderLair on Etsy (although the current version of this pattern on Etsy is different--I bought this one from her directly in 2014). The fabric is standard 20 ct. Lugana.

The quilt pattern for 2020 has the highs and lows; the tree pattern for 2021 has just the highs. Both patterns are by StitchinMommy on Etsy.

This is both the largest thing I've ever stitched and the first SAL I've ever finished (I have 2 more in craft prison I should get back to).

I'm finally getting together a post of the kits I completed in 2020. I apologise for the very ratty final photos. I don't work with hoops, tend to just take a phone photo at the end (usually at night) and then put the finished product in a cabinet without ironing it, and start the new project immediately.

I fell in love with Owl Forest kits in 2020, and have pretty much formally declared my love for all Russian kits in the process, lol.

Made some progress on one of my several WIPs. This is a 2016 stitch-a-long from CloudsFactory, "Fabulous Women in History" and I'm one-third done.

This is my first project on linen and I'm really struggling with it. I bought this as a kit and have some regrets: the fabric is beautiful but the threads are not very high quality.

I'm looking forward to doing more on this one. (Not just because I will do almost anything to avoid the backstitch on my Alaskan Otters WIP...)

This is page 1 of 8. It's called Proud Peacocks, and it's by Lesley Teare, who is easily one of my favourite cross stitch designers. There will eventually be peacocks, and the whole thing will be in these colours. I reaaally love this colour scheme!

My contribution to the arts for 2020

I designed it myself, using graph paper and software (Jane Greenoff Gold from around 2002 which I HATE and really need to upgrade to something reasonable, bu I digress). I stitched the house on the right and decided I hated the contrast, so the house on the left is a shade darker. I stitched using an unholy amalgam of Anchor and DMC threads from my stash.

I'm planning on updating the chart to show (DMC versions of) the colors I actually used, then releasing the chart as a PDF. Who knows, maybe Reddit will like it and other people will do it.

A friend of mine want to know if I'm selling them. LOL! I am slow and easily distracted and we'd probably be halfway through the NEXT pandemic before I complete another one. It was fun though.

P.S. Sorry for the terrible photo. I was excited!

P.P.S. This was my first time embroidering a hashtag. Also my first time actually embroidering a swear word. (They are always a part of my process but they're normally just said out loud, not captured in thread.)

Weird random questions for anyone

In my capacity as know-it-all, I recently stumbled upon something I don't know, and it's driving me nuts.

I asked on Reddit, but apparently I did a terrible job of phrasing the question, so allow me a brief story time here:

Aida cloth and tapestry needles both come in various sizes/scales. For aida cloth, it's 14/16/18 etc; for needles it's 24/26/28. For both, the higher the number the smaller the thing.

And for aida cloth (or evenweave) the numbers actually mean something - 14-count aida has 14 squares to the inch, for example.

Question: What about needle sizes? Do the numbers mean anything in absolute scale? Like, you could fit 28 size-28 needles in a centimeter or something? Or are they just arbitrary and relative?

I can't be the only person who wonders about these things, right? Right? :D

Bonus question: Is "Stitch People" out of print? What's the go-to nowadays for people and people accessories? I'm too lazy to design my own (barely getting un-lazy enough to try putting something together from parts).

Ghost Town

This was a kit from the Mill Hill Buttons & Beads Autumn Series. I did not get it done in time for Halloween. I didn’t even get it done in time for New Year’s.

Most of the beads don’t show up very well, but there are a lot of shiny, shiny beads in this. The ghosts are outlined in glow-in-the-dark thread. And I decided to go with a plum frame over the recommended purple iris.

Temperature Map 2019

I spent 2019 stitching the local weather. Each block represents the high temperature for that day and each color represents a five degree span.

Highs for December ranged from 24°F on December 10 to 62°F on December 26. Highs for 2019 ranged from -11°F on January 30 to 95°F on July 20. (Stats for 2018 can be found here.)

And that’s that for this piece of plastic canvas. This year I plan to do the highs and lows, and I also need to squeeze in an extra day for leap year, so I’ll be using the same colors with a different pattern.
